G4S security protects Leeds stadium rugby fans

G4S Events (G4S), the Europe-wide security and stewarding provider, is to provide services for rugby league team Leeds Rhinos and rugby union squad Leeds Carnegie at the 20,500-capacity Headingley Carnegie stadium, as part of a new three-year contract. G4S will be responsible for the safety and security of over 300,000 rugby fans a year.

The deal, involving up to 200 G4S staff on match days, will see the company provide services including site security, pedestrian and vehicle search, ticket checking, hospitality stewarding and provision of a safety officer on match days. G4S will also be providing bespoke technologies to aid reporting and site management.

Explaining why G4S was picked for the role, Leeds Rugby Chief Executive Gary Hetherington says: "G4S offered us an integrated solution that included risk management and environmental consultancy. Its management team have extensive experience of providing event security at major sporting venues and this along with its commitment to employing from the local community made them far and away the best choice for us."

Leeds Rugby is a dual code rugby partnership in which one company controls and runs professional teams in both Rugby League and Rugby Union. The venue, which first hosted a game in 1890, was renamed the Headingley Carnegie stadium following a £7 million investment by Leeds Metropolitan University. This includes a new North/South stand, Pavilion and Media Centre for cricket at the stadium.
